However, our ⁠Wondershare Recoverit review and hands-on testing also revealed several limitations that can make other data recovery software a better choice depending on the recovery scenario.

The main limitations were:

  • Recoverit’s short-term subscription costs considerably more than its annual plan if you end up needing the software for more than a single recovery job. Like other Wondershare subscriptions, it is also set to auto-renew unless you cancel it.
  • Recoverit is part of a much larger software ecosystem, and additional Wondershare products and services are promoted throughout the experience. This does not affect data recovery itself, but it can make the software feel more commercial than some alternatives.
  • Recoverit may find a file but fail to display its preview, which makes it difficult to check whether the file is intact before recovery. In our experience, this was not limited to unusual formats; preview problems also occurred with common files such as JPG and PNG images.
  • Recoverit covers most common recovery scenarios and includes disk imaging, but it lacks some additional disk utilities found in competing tools, such as S.M.A.R.T. monitoring.
  • The most concerning complaints involve files that are successfully found and recovered but turn out to be unusable.

Our Test Setup

We used the following hardware and test drive throughout the comparison:

  • Test PC: Windows 11 laptop with an Intel Core i5-13420H processor and 16 GB of RAM.
  • Test drive: 32 GB Kingston DataTraveler USB flash drive formatted as exFAT.
  • Test data: A mixed dataset containing JPG, PNG, CR2, and HEIC photos; PDF, DOC, XLSX, and SVG documents; and MP4 and MOV videos.

We measured scan time, the amount of usable data recovered, preservation of original filenames and folder structure, and preview reliability. We also checked whether the recovered files could actually be opened after recovery rather than counting every file the software detected as a successful result.

Data Loss Scenarios We Tested

We used two scenarios to see how each Recoverit alternative performs under different levels of data loss:

  • Deleted files: We copied the test dataset to the USB drive and deleted the files normally. This allowed us to test standard deleted file recovery while file system metadata was still available.
  • Quick-formatted drive: We restored the same dataset and then quick-formatted the USB drive. This gave us a more difficult scenario where the tools had to rely more heavily on file signature recovery instead of the original file system metadata.

How We Ranked the Tools

Recovery results carried the most weight, but they were not the only factor. We also evaluated usability, supported recovery scenarios, additional features such as disk imaging and RAID recovery, and the overall feature set of each program.

Our main focus will be on what we saw during our own tests: recovery results, scan performance, preview reliability, usability, and how well each program handled the two data loss scenarios.

Its approach combines file-system recovery with signature-based scanning, so the same scan can look for deleted files, reconstruct lost file-system data, and find files by their signatures when the original metadata is gone. It also includes tools that go beyond recovery itself, including byte-to-byte disk imaging, S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, RAID recovery, and Advanced Camera Recovery for fragmented camera and drone footage.

Best for: Users who want strong recovery performance, an easy workflow, and the option of a lifetime license instead of Recoverit’s auto-renewing subscription.

Interface & Usability

Disk Drill keeps most of the recovery process in a single workflow. On the main screen, you select the physical disk or partition and click Search for lost data. Instead of making you choose a specific scan algorithm first, Disk Drill runs the appropriate recovery methods and begins adding results while the scan is still in progress.

The results are divided into Existing, Deleted or Lost, and Reconstructed files. You can then browse them by file type or original path, apply filters, check recovery chances, and preview individual files before selecting what to recover. Finally, you choose a destination on a different drive and start recovery.

For camera and drone storage, there is also a separate Advanced Camera Recovery mode designed to reconstruct fragmented video files rather than treating every fragment as an independent file.

Recovery Performance in Our Tests

Disk Drill produced the strongest overall results in our tests. After ordinary deletion, it completed the scan in 7 minutes 18 seconds and successfully recovered 79 out of 79 files. The files found through the original file system retained their names and folder information, while signature-based results were listed separately as reconstructed files instead of being mixed with the original directory structure.

The quick-format test was more difficult. Disk Drill finished in 9 minutes 27 seconds and recovered 77 out of 79 files. The two missing files were both MOV videos. This is worth pointing out because the overall 77/79 result looks close to perfect, but it still means that one particular format in our dataset was not fully recovered.

Recoverit matched Disk Drill’s 79/79 result in the deletion test but took 10 minutes 34 seconds. After formatting, it took 16 minutes 21 seconds. It returned 65 files – only one MP4 video from the original video set was successfully recovered, while none of the MOV files were recovered. In other words, the higher result count did not translate into more original usable files. This is exactly why we did not rank the tools simply by the number of items shown after a scan.

What Makes Disk Drill a Better Recoverit Alternative?

  • Its results were cleaner after formatting. Disk Drill recovered 77 of our 79 original files, while Recoverit returned 65 results and performed poorly with our test videos.
  • It was faster in both scenarios. Disk Drill took 7m 18s for deleted files and 9m 27s after formatting, compared with Recoverit’s 10m 34s and 16m 21s.
  • Reconstructed files are clearly separated. Disk Drill distinguishes files recovered through the file system from signature-based results that may no longer have their original filenames or folder structure.
  • S.M.A.R.T. monitoring is built in. Recoverit does not provide an equivalent drive-health monitoring tool, while Disk Drill can display S.M.A.R.T. information for supported drives.

Compared with Recoverit, it gives you much more direct access to disks, volumes, partitions, file systems, and individual sectors instead of hiding most of the technical side of recovery. Alongside deleted file and RAW drive recovery, DMDE includes partition search and reconstruction, disk imaging and cloning, a disk editor, and tools for building RAID configurations. That makes it particularly interesting when the problem goes beyond accidentally deleted files.

Best for: Users who need low-level file system or lost partition recovery and want more manual control over the process.

Interface & Usability

DMDE looks intimidating at first, but basic recovery is actually fairly easy if you leave the advanced options alone. You select the physical drive, open the relevant volume or run Full Scan, choose the file system found by the scan, and browse the reconstructed directory tree for the files you need.

For a normal recovery job, there is little reason to touch the disk editor, partition-table operations, RAID configuration, or other low-level settings. Without the necessary knowledge, we would recommend leaving those options alone because some of them are designed to modify disk structures rather than simply read data.

Once DMDE finds the files, you select them and choose Recover to save them to another drive. The results browser preserves the technical feel of the rest of the program, though, and file preview is one area where DMDE falls behind Recoverit and Disk Drill. Previews open in a relatively small window and are not particularly convenient when you need to inspect a large number of photos or documents.

Recovery Performance in Our Tests

DMDE performed perfectly in our deleted-file test, although it was slower than Disk Drill. It completed the scan in 12 minutes 16 seconds and recovered 79 out of 79 files. Where file-system metadata remained available, it was able to reconstruct the original files with their names and directory information.

The quick-format test showed a larger difference. DMDE took 24 minutes 38 seconds and recovered 75 out of 79 files. The four files it failed to recover were all MOV videos. The remaining photos, documents, and other supported files from our dataset were recovered successfully.

This result also shows one of DMDE’s strengths and limitations. Its file-system reconstruction tools can be very effective when usable metadata remains, but once recovery depends more heavily on signatures, results vary by file type. In our case, the MOV files were the obvious weak point.

Compared with Recoverit, DMDE was slower in both scenarios. Recoverit completed our deletion test in 10m 34s and its formatted-drive scan in 16m 21s. However, Recoverit’s formatted scan returned 65 results from an original dataset of 79 files and recovered only one of our original MP4 videos, with none of the MOV files recovered. DMDE returned fewer files overall, but its 75/79 figure represents original usable files rather than simply the number of scan results.

What Makes DMDE a Better Recoverit Alternative?

  • It gives you much more control over file system recovery. DMDE exposes detected volumes, file systems, partitions, and scan results directly instead of relying primarily on an automated recovery workflow.

EaseUS has one of the simplest workflows in this comparison. The main screen displays the available disks and partitions. You select the location where the files were lost and start the scan; there is no need to choose a file system or configure individual scanning algorithms beforehand.

Results begin appearing while the scan is still running, so you do not have to wait for it to finish before reviewing files. EaseUS divides the results into Local disk, File Path Lost, and Reconstructed. The last category contains files for which the original filename can no longer be retrieved, which makes it easier to distinguish RAW results from files recovered with their original metadata.

You can browse the directory tree, filter the results, preview individual files, and select what you want to recover. In our tests, previews worked well with the common photos and documents we checked, although the interface places a lot of additional recovery and repair options around what is otherwise a very simple workflow.

Recovery Performance in Our Tests

EaseUS delivered the fastest results of the three Recoverit alternatives we had tested at this point. It completed the deleted-file scan in 6 minutes 24 seconds and recovered all 79 out of 79 files.

The quick-format test took 8 minutes 41 seconds. EaseUS recovered 75 out of 79 files, with all four missing files being MOV videos. Photos and documents from our dataset survived the test much better, while MOV was the obvious weak point once the original file-system information was removed.

This put EaseUS slightly behind Disk Drill’s 77/79 result after formatting but well ahead of Recoverit in scan speed. Recoverit took 10m 34s for deleted files and 16m 21s after formatting. Its formatted scan also returned 65 and only one MP4 from our original video set was recovered correctly, with none of the MOV files recovered correctly.

What Makes EaseUS a Better Recoverit Alternative?

  • It was considerably faster in our tests. EaseUS finished in 6m 24s and 8m 41s, compared with Recoverit’s 10m 34s and 16m 21s.
  • The recovery workflow requires almost no configuration. Select the affected drive, start scanning, review the results, and recover the files you need.

One important difference from Disk Drill, EaseUS, and Recoverit is how Stellar handles its deeper scan. Deep Scan does not automatically run as part of the initial scan. Once the first scan finishes, Stellar may offer you the option to continue with Deep Scan, and you have to start it separately.

We ran into exactly this situation with our quick-formatted Kingston USB drive. The initial scan returned no files at all. Stellar then suggested running Deep Scan, and only after we started it did the software begin finding the formatted data.

Once results are available, you can browse them by file type or directory structure, select individual files, and preview them before recovery. Preview worked well in our tests and gave us a reliable way to check the common photos and documents before restoring them.

Recovery Performance in Our Tests

Stellar completed our deleted-file test in 8 minutes 32 seconds and recovered 79 out of 79 files. In this scenario, the standard scan was enough to locate the dataset.

The formatted-drive test was quite different. As mentioned above, the initial scan found nothing, so we had to manually continue with Deep Scan. The complete process took 12 minutes 47 seconds and returned 86 files from our original 79-file dataset.

That number looks better than it actually was. None of our original MOV videos were recovered successfully, and only three MP4 videos survived the test.

This was similar to what we saw with Recoverit. Recoverit returned 65 results from the same 79 original files after formatting, but only one MP4 and none of the MOV videos were recovered correctly. Stellar found more of our MP4 files, although neither program handled the MOV videos successfully.

What Makes Stellar a Better Recoverit Alternative?

  • Its free recovery allowance is larger. Stellar Free provides up to 1 GB of recovery, compared with 100 MB in Recoverit.

Unlike Recoverit and most other programs on this list, it does not attempt to reconstruct the original file system. Instead, it ignores it and searches the storage directly for known file signatures. This makes PhotoRec particularly suitable for formatted or corrupted drives where little useful file-system metadata remains. It recognizes more than 480 file extensions across roughly 300 file families.

Best for: Users looking for a Wondershare Recoverit alternative free of recovery limits.

Price: PhotoRec is completely free and open source under the GNU General Public License. There are no subscriptions, paid editions, or recovery limits.

Interface & Usability

PhotoRec is easily the least conventional program on this list. The standard version uses a text-based interface where you select the physical disk, partition, file-system type, file signatures to search for, scan area, and recovery destination.

There is also QPhotoRec, a graphical version of the same recovery tool. It puts the main options into a basic GUI, so you can select the disk, partition, file types, and destination without working through the text interface. However, it is still far less convenient than Recoverit, Disk Drill, EaseUS, or Stellar.

The biggest limitation is what happens after you start the scan. PhotoRec has no preview, so you cannot browse the results and decide which files to recover. It recovers files as it finds them, meaning you do not really know what you are getting until you open the results afterward.

That can produce much more data than expected. If the drive still contains recoverable remnants of files deleted before your current data-loss incident, PhotoRec can carve those files too. There is no original directory tree to tell you which files belonged to the latest deletion and which were older.

Recovered data is placed into folders named recup_dir.1, recup_dir.2, and so on. Original filenames and folder structure are generally lost, and recovered files instead receive generated names such as f0016741.pdf.

PhotoRec was remarkably consistent across our two tests.

In the deleted-file test, it recovered 79 out of 79 files in 15 minutes 23 seconds. After we quick-formatted the same USB drive, it again recovered 79 out of 79 files, this time in 15 minutes 46 seconds.

That gave PhotoRec a perfect result in terms of our original test dataset. Unlike several other tools, it also recovered all of the test videos after formatting.

PhotoRec recovered the file contents, but it did not reconstruct their original names or folder structure. Everything was written into recup_dir folders under generated filenames. And because there is no preview or pre-recovery results browser, we had to let PhotoRec recover the files first and sort through them afterward.

It also recovered additional old files whose data was still present on the USB drive. Those files were not part of our current 79-file dataset but had previously been stored on the device and had not yet been overwritten. This is expected behavior for a signature-based file carver, but it makes finding a particular lost file considerably more time-consuming.

What Makes PhotoRec a Better Recoverit Alternative?

  • It is completely free. PhotoRec has no data limit, subscription, or paid recovery tier, while Recoverit’s free version is limited to 100 MB.
  • It recovered all 79 files in both of our tests. Most importantly, its result did not drop after we quick-formatted the drive.
  • It does not depend on the original file system. PhotoRec searches for known file signatures directly, so it can continue working even when the file system is severely damaged or reformatted.
  • Its signature support is extensive. PhotoRec recognizes more than 480 extensions across around 300 file families.
  • There is a graphical version. QPhotoRec makes the basic recovery process more accessible if you do not want to use PhotoRec’s text-based interface.
  • It returned better usable video results in our formatted-drive test. PhotoRec recovered all of our test videos, while Recoverit recovered only one MP4 and none of the MOV files.

The trade-off is organization. Recoverit lets you browse, filter, and preview files before recovery, whereas PhotoRec gives you a collection of recovered files that you have to sort through afterward.

R-Studio is developed by R-Tools Technology and is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It takes a more technical approach than Recoverit, combining file-system reconstruction and raw file recovery with disk imaging, S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, lost partition recovery, and extensive RAID tools. It supports NTFS, ReFS, FAT/exFAT, APFS, HFS+, Ext2/3/4, XFS, UFS, and other file systems, while its RAID module can work with standard, nested, and custom arrays.

Best for: RAID recovery and advanced recovery scenarios where you need more control over disks, file systems, and scan parameters. We tested it on a single USB drive, so the RAID recommendation is based on its supported features rather than a dedicated RAID test.

Price: R-Studio starts at $49.99 for R-Studio FAT, while the full R-Studio license for Windows costs $79.99 as a one-time purchase. More expensive Corporate and Technician licenses are available for network, commercial, and professional data recovery work.

Interface & Usability

R-Studio looks complicated at first, but basic recovery is not particularly difficult. If all you need to do is scan a drive, the workflow is clear enough: select the disk or partition, click Scan, leave the default parameters in place, and open one of the recognized file systems when the scan finishes. From there, you can browse the recovered directory tree, preview files, mark what you need, and click Recover.

The difficulty appears when you move beyond that basic workflow. R-Studio has a huge number of additional tools and settings, but they are not all exposed directly on the main toolbar. RAID reconstruction, imaging options, sector maps, advanced file information, scan parameters, and other functions are spread across menus, dialogs, and contextual options. If you do not already know what you are looking for, finding a specific feature can take some time.

One thing we particularly liked appears during the scan itself. R-Studio displays a graphical map of the scanned blocks and shows what it encounters, including file-system records, boot records, and known file types. This gives you more information about what is happening than the simple progress bars used by most consumer recovery tools. R-Studio also provides I/O monitoring and sector-map functionality for problematic drives.

Preview worked well in our tests. R-Studio includes a dedicated file previewer for photos, videos, and documents, so we could inspect the files before deciding what to recover.

Recovery Performance in Our Tests

R-Studio recovered 79 out of 79 files in our deleted-file test. The scan took 16 minutes 14 seconds, making it one of the slower programs in our comparison, but the final result was complete.

After quick-formatting the USB drive, R-Studio took 22 minutes 36 seconds and recovered 75 out of 79 files. The four missing files were all MOV videos. The other files in our test dataset, including photos and documents, were recovered successfully.

That puts R-Studio behind Disk Drill and PhotoRec in our formatted-drive test. R-Studio was also slower than Recoverit in both tests. Recoverit took 10m 34s for deleted files and 16m 21s after formatting. However, its formatted scan returned 65 results, and only one MP4 video was recovered correctly, with none of the MOV files recovered correctly. R-Studio returned fewer results, but 75 represented usable original files from our dataset.

What Makes R-Studio a Better Recoverit Alternative?

  • RAID recovery is far more advanced. R-Studio supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, and 6 as well as nested and non-standard layouts, custom parameters, and automatic RAID parameter recognition.
  • It gives you considerably more control over scanning. You can specify scan regions, expected file systems, known file types, and other parameters instead of relying almost entirely on an automated workflow.
  • Disk imaging is built into the recovery environment. R-Studio can create images of complete disks, partitions, or selected regions and scan those images like physical devices.
  • S.M.A.R.T. monitoring is included. This gives you additional information about the condition of supported drives before proceeding with a lengthy recovery operation.
  • Its scan visualization provides more technical information. Instead of showing only progress, R-Studio visualizes the records and known file types it encounters during scanning.
  • File-system support is much broader. R-Studio covers Windows, macOS, Linux, and Unix file systems, making it a stronger option when the source drive did not originate from a standard Windows setup.

The trade-off is usability. Recoverit puts most of what an average user needs directly in front of them, while R-Studio often expects you to know which advanced feature you need and where to find it.

Final Verdict

Our tests showed that there is no single Recoverit alternative that makes the most sense in every situation. All six tools have different strengths, and the right choice depends on what happened to your data, how much control you need, and whether you are willing to pay for recovery.

  • Choose Disk Drill if you want the best overall balance of recovery results, scan speed, usability, reliable previews, and additional tools such as disk imaging and S.M.A.R.T. monitoring.
  • Choose DMDE if you are dealing with a lost partition or damaged file system and want more low-level control over the recovery process without paying much for the software.
  • Choose EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard if you are a beginner and want a simple workflow with fast scans and very little configuration.
  • Choose Stellar Data Recovery if you mainly need a familiar guided interface for everyday photo, document, and file recovery and don’t mind starting Deep Scan manually when the initial scan finds nothing.
  • Choose PhotoRec if you need a completely free solution and care more about recovering the actual file contents than preserving original filenames, folder structure, or previewing files before recovery.
  • Choose R-Studio if you need advanced data recovery features, particularly RAID recovery, broad file system support, detailed scan information, and more control over how the storage is analyzed.

FAQ

Yes, Recoverit is legitimate data recovery software developed by Wondershare. The recovery scan itself operates in read-only mode, so it does not modify the source drive. The bigger risk comes from writing new data to the affected storage, so install recovery software elsewhere and save recovered files to a different drive.
Based on our tests, Disk Drill offers the best overall balance of recovery performance, speed, previews, and additional tools, along with the option of a lifetime license instead of Recoverit’s auto-renewing subscription. However, there is no single best alternative to Wondershare Recoverit for every recovery case. EaseUS is a good choice for beginners, DMDE for low-level and partition recovery, Stellar for users who want more scan control without R-Studio’s technical complexity, R-Studio for RAID and advanced recovery, and PhotoRec if you need a completely free solution.
If Recoverit cannot find or successfully recover your files, another program may produce different results because recovery tools use different file-system reconstruction and signature-scanning algorithms. On a healthy drive, running another read-only scan is generally fine as long as you do not write new data to the source drive. If the drive is unstable or physically failing, create a disk image first instead of repeatedly scanning it.
Disk Drill is our preferred Recoverit alternative for video recovery, particularly for footage recorded directly by cameras and drones. Besides its standard recovery methods, its Advanced Camera Recovery mode is specifically designed to reconstruct fragmented video files from devices such as GoPro, DJI, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, and Insta360 cameras. PhotoRec also performed particularly well in our test dataset, recovering all MP4 and MOV files after quick formatting, but it does not provide previews or preserve original filenames and folder structure.
Not by itself. Scanning with several read-only recovery tools does not normally overwrite recoverable data on a healthy drive. Your chances decrease when new data is written to the source drive and overwrites the space occupied by deleted files. The exception is a physically unstable drive, where repeated full scans can put unnecessary stress on failing hardware; in that case, imaging the drive first is the safer approach.
Finding a file does not necessarily mean that all of its original data is still intact. Recoverit may locate remaining directory information or recognize a file signature even when parts of the actual file have already been overwritten, are missing, or were corrupted before recovery. Wondershare itself notes that a filename or file size appearing in scan results does not confirm that the recovered file will be usable. This is why we evaluated successfully opened files in our tests rather than treating every item displayed in the scan results as a successful recovery.
